Residential Steam Showers

Residential Steam Showers
by Eric Morris

Water is the source of life. It is used for drinking, watering plants, cooking or bathing. Water in gaseous form is called vapor or steam, which is used for powering engines, pressing clothes and also plays important roles in health and relaxation.
Steam baths have been popular for years, though in modern times this turned out to be more a part of the relaxation process. It helps to open pores, relax muscles and increase blood circulation. Nowadays people are often going in for steam treatments, as they provide a therapeutic effect, and soothe and relax the senses. You can get the same treatment right at your place by installing a steam shower.

Steam showers are similar to other showers. The generator delivers steam to a shower enclosure with suitable seals, creating a leisure facility in the privacy of your own home. These showers now can be easily installed in almost any bathroom, and are affordable, too. They include components like a steam generator, steam outlets and steam heads. The generator creates the necessary heat to produce steam. Then the steam moves through the steam outlet in the shower wall and fills the shower area. These steam showers can be installed either in the bathroom vanity, under the floor or in the bench seat.

These showers can also be equipped with CD players, steam-free mirrors, mood lighting and remote controls for heat, music and light. While buying a steam shower, note the difference between saunas and steam heaters. Steam showers produce wet heat, whereas saunas produce dry heat. So when you want to relax after a busy day or want a fresh start in the morning, then indulge in a warm and soothing steam shower.

Steam Room Benefits

Steam Room Benefits
by David Daniel

The benefits of the steam room have been known for thousands of years and throughout history countless people have been using steam to enhance their sense of well being and improve their overall health. At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st a huge influx in health conscious individuals in western society has fuelled a vast growth in the health industry.
In the past, steam rooms have been restricted to health clubs and gyms, and many think steam rooms are only used at home by the wealthy; however top steam room specialists have made this wonderful past time available to everybody, not just the rich. With cutting edge technology at affordable prices, countless people are now enjoying all the wonderful benefits of a steam room.

Brief Overview of Steam Room Benefits
In a steam room, wet heat opens the pores of your skin to aid body detoxification. A steam generator is used to create water vapor at high levels of humidity. The heat and humidity may bring health benefits ranging from aiding stress relief, to body cleansing, to soothing aching muscles or arthritis.

This article will highlight the main benefits and the importance of using a steam room:

1st Steam Room Benefit: Eliminate toxins
The average body has approximately 2.6 million sweat glands. The body only has four ways to excrete toxins; urine, feces, respiration and perspiration. During a steam room session the body can sweat out up to 30% of its toxins that have built up. Studies have shown that environmental chemicals and poor diet cause 95% of cancers, which in today's society makes a steam room a very healthy and practical addition to the home.

2nd Steam Room Benefit: Rejuvenate and Hydrate the Skin
Heat from the steam causes the heart to beat faster and harder in an attempt to cool the body, causing blood to flood even the smallest capillaries. Increased blood flow to these tiny capillaries (just under the skins surface) causes the skin to glow and look healthy because the blood cells carry minerals, vitamins and oxygen: vital for a healthy body. In addition, this increases the rate of body metabolism.

3rd Steam Room Benefit: Boost the immune system: Hyperthermia
Hyperthermia refers to an elevation of core body temperature to above 37.2°C for therapeutic purposes. During a steam room session the body temperature rises and when the body temperature rises it is called a fever (elevation of body temperature above the normal level). A virus can only usually survive within a narrow temperature range. Therefore an increase in body temperature may either stunt the virus' multiplication or kill the virus. Fever triggers the body to release white blood cells, antibodies and a protein called interferon. The white blood cells, which are produced in the bone marrow, help to defend the body against infectious diseases and foreign materials. Antibodies are proteins which help protect against disease-causing micro-organisms whilst interferon is any group of proteins produced by cells in the body in response to an attack by a virus.

4th Steam Room Benefit: Enhance the Respiratory System
Steam inhalation supports mucosal secretions in the respiratory system and helps to open up the airways therefore reducing respiration resistance. This helps to relieve the discomfort of asthma and allergies. Steam room benefits also include relieving inflammation and congestion of upper respiratory mucous membranes. It also helps to loosen secretions, stimulate the discharge of mucous from the throat and lungs (natural expectorant) and keeps mucous membranes from excessive drying.

5th Steam Room Benefit: Relieve Stress and Relax Muscles
Heat from the steam causes the muscles to relax, widening the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen to flow to them, releasing their tension. The heat also gives relief to sufferers of arthritis. The heat from the steam causes the whole body to relax; this experience melts away stress and soothes the mind & body.

Using a Steam Shower

Using a Steam Shower
(reprint of 5th March 2007)

A steam shower can be used both with or without the steam function operating. When using the steam function in a steam shower, there are many factors to take into consideration for a safe and relaxing experience. There is no right and wrong way to use a steam shower as every person is different and every person has their own personal preferences. However, there are a few things you can do to help make your steam shower experience safe and exhilarating. Below are a few pointers on using a steam shower.

Steam Shower Preparation
Drink Plenty of Water Before Using a Steam Shower: It is a good practice to keep hydrated all the time, drinking about 8 pints of water per day to replace and top up the water in the body. The importance of drinking sufficient water before using a steam shower is even greater. Thirty minutes before using a steam shower drink plenty of water to ensure you are well hydrated. This is beneficial on two levels. It is good to keep hydrated during the steam shower and it is also good to keep the bodies water supply topped up. The body is 70% water, therefore it's vital to keep hydrated to perform sharp mentally, physically and to remain in good health. It is said that a 2% drop in bodily fluids is the main cause of daytime fatigue highlighting the importance of hydration before and after a steam shower session.

Pre-Heat the Steam Shower: If you like to enter the steam shower when it is hot (around 30ยบ Celsius), activate the steam function in the steam shower ten minutes before you intend to use it. If you wish to enter the steam shower as soon as the steam is switched on, it is unlikely you will be able to reach a temperature that is as high as the pre-heated steam shower.

Using the Steam Shower
Enter the Steam Shower quickly: If you are entering a steam shower that has been pre-heated it is important to enter the steam shower quickly to avoid heat loss. When the steam shower doors are opened, steam will escape. The longer the steam shower doors are left open, the more steam will escape, resulting in a cooler temperature within the steam shower. Be quick to get into the steam shower, however don't be so hasty that you slip or hurt yourself.
Steaming up: While you are in the steam shower you will notice your skin will become wet. Some of the moisture on your skin is from sweat and some from the water vapor in the steam, which rests upon your skin. Oftentimes this water vapor rests upon the hairs of the arms which gives them the appearance of being white. Some people prefer to sit while others prefer to stand while steaming up.

Radio: You can activate the radio and listen to your favorite radio station while relaxing in your steam shower.

Aromatherapy: Depending on the mood you are in, you can add 5 drops of aromatherapy oil onto the steam outlet. The aromatherapy oil is caught up in the steam, dispersing the aroma throughout the steam shower. Take deep breaths in through your nose and your entire orifice will be relaxed or enlivened, depending on the aromatherapy oil used. After approximately five minutes one could add a few more drops of aromatherapy oil to top up the dissipated aroma fragrance.

Shaving / Exfoliating: The steam shower is an excellent place to shave and exfoliate. The steam loosens dead skin making exfoliation easy using a loofah pad. Shaving in a steam shower is effortless. Men who don't like to shave because of the discomfort will find a shave in the shower a joy. Apply shaving cream to the face (the shaving cream should be left outside the steam shower as it is a pressurized canister). When you start to shave, the blade will glide over the skin removing the hair, almost as if it wasn't there. Some men have said that the best shave they have ever had has been in a steam shower. Women who shave their legs can also reap the benefits of shaving in a steam shower.

Cooling down / Washing off: After 15 to 30 minutes, or the pre-determined length of the steam session, turn the steam function off. Turn the shower on and change the temperature of the water so it is cool to cold. Shower in the cool to cold water to cool the core body temperature and wash the hair with shampoo and conditioner. If you would like to steam for longer, just turn the steam back on. Typically it is also possible to have the steam and the shower on at the same time.

Finish: Open the doors and the steam will billow out. It is good to open up a window if there is one as this will assist the bathroom and steam shower extractor fan in demisting the bathroom.
After the Steam ShowerAfter using the steam shower it is recommended to have another glass of water. This will ensure you are well hydrated, replenishing all the water lost from the steam shower session. If you don't drink enough water before and after a steam shower session you may get a headache or feel faint.

What is a Steam Shower?

What is a Steam Shower?
(reprint of 10th March 2007)

Brief definition of a Steam Shower
A steam shower is a small cabin or enclosure designed to contain heated water vapor that has been created using a humidifying steam generator. A steam shower session can be a social affair if the enclosure sits more than one person. Steam showers combine the functionality of a standard steam room with many additional features including a shower. Steam showers are designed for use in a bathroom. Therefore, many of them have been packed out with features that enhance the standard showering experience, turning the bathroom into a mini spa.

Brief History of the Steam Shower
Steam showers are an adaptation of the steam room. Steam rooms can be traced back to the Roman times where the Romans would bathe in a sweat room called a sudatorium. Around the same era, the Turks had their Turkish bath (the hammam), while the Russians caught hold of the concept and had their own steam bath called the banya. The history of the sudatorium goes back to the ancient Greeks. With the evolution of technology, manufacturers integrated the steam room and shower into a combination unit called a steam shower, designed for use in a bathroom.

Types of Steam Shower
There are many different styles of steam showers for every home and taste. The following are the most popular styles of steam shower:

Single / Double Steam Showers
Steam showers can have seats in them, and the ones that do usually have one or two seats. Steam showers with two seats are generally larger than steam showers with one seat, however, there are steam showers which are large and only have one seat.

Corner / Wall Steam Showers
Steam showers are manufactured to many different specifications as customers have different spacing requirements, therefore steam showers are made for both corners and walls. Steam showers which are designed for corners are generally free standing and can be pushed into the corner. Steam showers which are designed to stand against a flat wall are often rectangular and are also free standing.

Bathtub Steam Showers
Steam showers can also have a whirlpool or standard bath integrated into the unit. Instead of a shower base, a whirlpool bath with hydromassage jets is used. The user can have the option of bathing in the bathtub, using the shower, or the steam, making the bathtub steam shower the ultimate bathroom centerpiece. Steam showers that have a whirlpool bath are generally larger than steam showers with a shower base.

Features of a Steam Shower
There are many different steam showers on the market, integrating into them different technologies. Steam showers can include some of the following features:

1. Music & Phone Connections - A function which allows the user to connect an external audio device (e.g. CD player, iPod, MP3 player, etc.) to the steam shower. The user can listen to their favorite music while showering. Steam showers usually have a phone connection which enables the user to dial and answer calls while in the steam shower.
2. Handheld shower on slide rail - The same as a handheld shower on slide rail in a standard shower.
3. Overhead shower - Usually a static shower head, integrated in the roof of the steam shower unit. This usually gives the effect of falling rain as the surface area of the head is large, approximately six inches in diameter.
4. Body Jets - Steam showers often have body jets, enhancing the steam experience further. Typically ranging in number from 4 to 16+, the jets, acting as hydrotherapy treatment, spray water onto the muscles relaxing and stimulating them.
5. Digital control panel with remote control - Steam showers can have a digital control panel which will control most of the features within the unit. For example, it can control the overhead shower, the steam temperature and the radio function.
6. Thermostatic controller - A thermostatic valve controls the temperature of the shower water, preventing surges of hot and cold water.
7. Foot massage - A device, usually attached to the wall of the steam shower that can be placed on the floor to massage the feet. Water sprays up from the foot massage which massages the feet.
8. Steam generator with time and temperature settings - A steam generator acts like a kettle: it is the physical device which produces the steam. Steam generators on residential steam showers usually range between 2-3KW. The higher the wattage of the steam generator, the faster the water will boil, therefore the faster the steam shower will fill with steam.
9. Aromatherapy - This feature uses a mechanism that allows the bather to add drops of essential oils to the steam outlet, steaming the aroma into the steam shower, improving the steam shower experience even more.
10. Radio and speaker - Operated from the control panel within the steam shower, the bather can listen to the radio, with a built in shower speaker.
11. Fluorescent overhead light - Usually a circular fluorescent light, the overhead light illuminates the steam shower, creating a fresh bright atmosphere.
12. Shampoo & Body Wash Dispensers - A shampoo bottle, attached to the wall of the steam shower which can be filled up with shampoo and conditioner.
13. O3 - A function that is activated when the steam shower is switched off. This self activating function releases a gas called O3 which sterilizes the unit, helping to reduce the build up of bacteria.
14. Seat - A seat which allows the bather to sit down and relax during a steam shower session.

Summary
Steam rooms have a rich history. The development of technology has brought along with it affordability. Where steam showers would not have been an option in the past due to expense, they are now available at reasonable prices. The integration of the steam shower with the home bathroom will ensure the tradition of the steam room will live on for many years to come.

JRD Steam gets SANTA FE STEAMIN set up.

Last weekend was a wonderful weekend. I traveled down to Santa Fe, New Mexico and worked a holistic and wellness show as well as getting our new distributor set up - Santa Fe Steamin. Santa Fe Steamin will be selling the steam showers and walk in tubs just like us. What a great area...with a couple installs under our belts in the Santa Fe Area already, the steam units look great in the old adobe style houses that I saw while visiting.

I am particularly excited about Santa Fe and our products as I feel Santa Fe is doing some great things with holistic healing. What a great way to further research the benefits of our aromatherapy trays and all of the different benefits aromatherapy and steam can offer!

With amazing food and art as well as the potential for so many folks to enjoy our products, it is my hope to be getting back to Santa Fe soon.
